Monument was inspired by my grandparents house in Wisconsin.  There were many simple rituals that deeply connected me to this space and time during my upbringing.  One in particular was the act of grabbing “pop" in the basement fridge.  After finishing our drink, we got to go crush the can on my grandpa’s handmade can crusher.

Gallery viewers were invited to take a drink from the refrigerator and make a toast in an atmosphere of celebration.  The piece is centered around the toast and interactions between people while participating in a personal ritual.  As people continued to participate, pictures were taken of them and added onto the fridge as the night went on.  There was a magnet placed at the bottom of every can so when it was crushed the participants could stick their cans anywhere on the fridge.
